We were all packed and ready to go, we arrived at AG Heritage Park on the Auburn Campus at about 2pm cst. We went to the area they told us to and one other team had already set up. It was weird that they just told us to set up anywhere and the other teams were all on higher ground. But we did as we were told, we set up the canopies and put the smoker in place preparing the site. Other teams started to set up around us and their must have been 60-70 teams all in place over the park. Everything was great, MAC and Chuck went to get the all important BEER while Murray and I started preparing the meat. We spoke to a couple of the teams and checked out all the rigs and cookers, this was going to be a good cook-off. After the meat was on ice and we sampled a couple beers to make sure they were at the proper temp we headed to the hotel to check in and get ready to hit the dog track later. I must say the hotel Chuck got us, was the biggest dump I have ever seen. MAC and Murray had some animal running in the roof of there room while Chuck and I were snoring to loud in our room for an animal to stick around. We get up at 6 am and head off to the site to fire up the smoker and have a good time. Here is where all the drama starts, it is pouring and lighting is hitting all around us. We are on a slope in the lowest part of the park. All the water is running down to us and we are standing in 3 inches of water. The park manager comes by and tells us that we wont be able to get out of the park or or area until late Saturday or Sunday at best since they were expecting another 6 inches of rain Saturday and our truck wont be able to get out. GREAT! So we talk amongst ourselves and decide we got to get the truck out now and they will pull the smoker out with a cub cadet, the other teams by us decide to stay or aren’t there yet. We get the Pilot out pretty easy but the guys haven’t come to get the smoker. The idea is that if we can set up on higher ground we can still get the smoker going and meet the turn in times, but this is all dependent on us getting set up quick! At 8:30 they have a captains mtg so Murray and I walk that way while MAC and Chuck wait for the cadet to pull the smoker. In the mtg they are so unorganized it is crazy, they start changing the rules for the turn in times to an earlier time and asking for the cooks to vote, this is crazy. So we don’t have a spot to cook yet since they moved us and we aren’t set up and you want to move the turn in time in on us! Really? And there is a bigger storm coming in in a few hours, great. We talk about it and decide we are already packed since they moved us, so lets bolt. We head back to the hotel and put on dry clothes then back to Atlanta! What a waste, looked like it was going to be a great competition and we were ready! Well I guess there is always the next competition to look forward too!
